Titan’s Huge Ego
Picture this: the year 1912, a time when the Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, was about to set sail. It was a marvel, a floating palace on the high seas, boasting opulence that rivaled the grandest hotels of the era but I always thought the Titanic was just a ship that had a huge ego and that it had it coming, it needed to be humbled which did happen but at the cost of 1500 lives and I felt that the only good thing that came out of the tragic incident was the movie. The Titanic’s ignorance, not having enough lifeboats on board, and ignoring iceberg warnings thinking that the Titanic was unsinkable, were some of the reasons why it sank. I guess you can give the Captain of the ship some credit as he did something impossible, sinking the unsinkable. People always say that we should learn history so that we don’t make the same mistakes again from the past but the 2023 Titan Submersible, designed and built by OceanGate did the exact opposite.
On June 18, 2023, the Titan Submersible went on its 3rd expedition to view the wrecks of the Titanic. On board were 5 passengers including OceanGate’s CEO who all died during the implosion. The Titan set sail even when many experts had raised concerns about the safety of the vessel but the Titan was blinded by its huge ego. The Titan was built with materials that were the least expensive, so cheap that a 10-dollar Xbox controller was used to steer the ship. Many people were devastated after the tragic event but some reacted the exact opposite, creating memes about the implosion and getting a laugh. Both the Titan implosion and the Titanic collision are so similar, both have similar names, both lost to the sea and both were too confident and ignorant. Overall the only good thing that came from implosion might have been the memes and maybe the hopes for a romantic movie beneath the sea similar to the movie for the Titanic.
I enjoyed the humor you added to your post especially the part where you mention hwo the only good thing to come out of the Titanic was the movie. Also, I liked how you added memes to enhance your blog post.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you used humor to describe this serious event and reminds me of Sara Vowell's use of humor in her story.
