Is Cancel Culture an Effective Method ?
Cancel Culture is very common in our society. We all know someone, a celebrity or a friend that has been canceled somehow, and with that being said, the question being posed, is cancel culture an effective method to hold individuals accountable for their actions ? Well it depends on various perspectives. Firstly, what is cancel culture ? Cancel culture refers to the practice of canceling public figures or common individuals after they have done or said something that is considered offensive, controversial, or harmful. It might sound like it’s a useful method but it has its pros and cons.
Cancel culture can hold individuals or organizations accountable for their actions, especially when some fail to address their behavior. It can also serve us a method for social justice or accountability for people with a lot of power. For example, a famous NBA player, Ja Morant was suspended and fined from the NBA because of an incident where he showed his gun on a live stream. This wasn’t liked by the fans because a prominent figure advertising a gun might have negative effects on the youth, although what Ja Morant did was perfectly legal, the gun was registered to him and he didn’t use it rather than just show it, so no one could hold him accountable and this is where cancel culture comes, fans started cancelling him on social media, started criticizing the player and the organization finally forcing them to take action. Cancel culture can also be positive when it can be used to raise awareness on racism, homophobia and sexism. For example, JK Rowling, when she was canceled about her comments about transgenders. But in come cases, Cancel Culture can lead to wrongful accusations, for example a situation where the full context isn’t shown, so certain people can use this to target others. People can also argue cancel culture decreases the right of speech. Some could argue JK Rowling expressed her thoughts and her right of speech but that black lashed due to cancel culture. So now reflect and answer the question, is cancel effective or not ? I personally think it depends on the situation, some cases cancel culture can be useful but in some, it may be the opposite.
